Menstrual cycle explained in simple words
Here is a short, non‑medical explanation of what the menstrual cycle is and why it is useful to track it.
Phases of the cycle
Menstruation
Bleeding days. The lining of the uterus is shed and a new cycle begins.
Follicular phase
After menstruation, follicles in the ovaries grow and the body prepares an egg.
Ovulation
The egg is released from the ovary. This is the most fertile period of the cycle.
Luteal phase
After ovulation, progesterone increases. Many people feel changes in mood and body (PMS).
What symptoms can be normal
Mild pulling pain, slight mood swings and moderate changes in discharge can be variants of the norm. Strong pain, very heavy bleeding or sharp deterioration in health are a reason to see a doctor.
When to see a doctor
If periods are very painful, too heavy, suddenly disappear or any symptoms worry you, it is always better to consult a specialist.
